For the history of Collagraph
Collagraph is an art technique from the past that is enter into the collage
world today. See the article on Collagraph in the Jan/Feb ’07 issue
of Somerset Studio pg. 24. The collagraph is one of the simplest forms of
printmaking, utilizing discarded cardboard or matte board, found textural
materials and odds and ends from second hand stores, old wallpaper, etc.
It combines collage with printmaking. Once the “plate” is assembled,
many prints can be taken from that plate.
One can use a small etching press
to transfer the image, or transfer it by hand. Prints can be black and white,
one color, or multi-colored. They can be hand-colored afterwards, or painted
or drawn into. The plates themselves are toned and beautiful and can be a
piece of art in themselves. This workshop will cover the basics of constructing
a simple collagraph plate from cardboard, found materials, scraps and other
textures, inking it up, then making prints from the plate, both by hand and
from a small press. Participants will have the chance to explore various
collagraph techniques, and to experiment with them, making as many prints
as desired.
